ASUU Members Demand Immediate Action Following Kidnappings of Members and Students in Nasarawa

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) took to the streets on Friday to peacefully protest against the alarming increase in the kidnapping of its members and students at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).

The protest, which was held in front of the Senate Building of the university, aimed to draw attention to the desperate need for improved security measures on campus.

In recent times, lecturers and students have fallen victim to armed abductions, only to be released later on. The recurring incidents have left the academic community deeply concerned and fearful for their safety.

During the protest, participants showcased their displeasure through powerful placards carrying messages such as “Gov. A.A. Sule, save us from terrorists” and “Save lives of university lecturers. Overhaul the security apparatus in Keffi for us to be secured.” Clearly, the lives of the lecturers are at stake and urgent action needs to be taken.

ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, addressed the press following the protest and strongly condemned the rampant kidnapping cases plaguing the institution.

Expressing deep concern, Osodeke called upon the relevant authorities to implement effective measures to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of all members of the university community.

He lauded the organizing branch of ASUU for their efforts in raising awareness and asserting the union’s dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.

“I commend this branch for their determination in organizing this protest, and I want to assure you all that we, as ASUU, will take further action to address this unfortunate situation,” Osodeke affirmed.

The protest serves as a resounding message to the concerned authorities that the lives and well-being of lecturers and students must be prioritized. It is imperative that immediate steps be taken to revamp security apparatus within the university campus, ensuring a safe learning environment for all.
