The prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has expressed concern over the lack of interest among Igbo youths in joining the Nigeria Police Force, labeling it a distressing trend.
In a statement issued on Monday in Enugu and signed by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Alex Ogbonnia, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, highlighted this disheartening development.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that enlisting in the police force is crucial for Igbo individuals aspiring to achieve senior positions in law enforcement in the future.
Iwuanyanwu expressed concern about the lackadaisical attitude exhibited by youths from the Southeast region of Nigeria towards the ongoing recruitment exercise for General Duty Constables in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the available data, Kaduna State leads with 20,259 online applications for the police recruitment, whereas Anambra State trails behind with a meager 541 applications.
“Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and Enugu States have 737, 966, 999, and 1,036 applications respectively,” Iwuanyanwu added.
The Igbo leader urged the Southeast Governors, led by Hope Uzodimma, the Chairman of the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers, led by HRH Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in each state, as well as other influential figures and representative bodies such as Chief Emeka Diwe, the Chairman of the Association of South East Town Unions, the clergy, and various Igbo groups and social movements, to leverage their respective networks and platforms in sensitizing and encouraging Igbo youths to seize the opportunity presented by the ongoing recruitment exercise.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s appeal seeks to motivate Igbo youths to consider careers in the police force and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s security. (NAN)
