The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has issued a challenge to the State House of Assembly to publicly disclose the offences that have led to the commencement of impeachment proceedings against him. This statement marks Fubara’s first official response to the announcement made by the House of Assembly.

Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Boniface Onyedi, Fubara condemned the bombing of a section of the House of Assembly complex. The governor described the attack, carried out by suspected hoodlums using Improvised Explosive Devices, as an unfortunate attempt by “disgruntled persons to forcefully take over control of the assembly.”

Asserting his commitment to peace, Fubara expressed concern over the destruction of a facility built with taxpayers’ money for selfish reasons. He strongly disavowed any involvement in such destruction, stating, “even if I am aware that there is a plot to impeach me for whatever reason, I can never ever be part of such destruction.”

Fubara also highlighted the illegality of any legislative actions taken during the purported plenary session held by some members. He accused those who orchestrated the attack of attempting to divert attention away from their own actions.

The governor firmly declared his resistance to any unjustified attempts to impeach him and called on the lawmakers to reveal his alleged offences to the people of Rivers State. He expressed gratitude for the support of the people and assured them that he would continue to defend and protect their interests.

In addition, Fubara raised concerns about compromised security operatives. He claimed that his vehicle was shot at directly while en route to the assembly complex to assess the extent of the damage caused by the early morning bombing.

Fubara commended the youths for standing up to protect the state’s interests. The House of Assembly has also moved motions to remove the Majority Leader, Edison Ehie, and suspend three other lawmakers for alleged failures in discharging their responsibilities.

With the majority of lawmakers voting in favor of the motions, the political landscape in Rivers State remains in flux. As the details of the impeachment proceedings unfold, the people of Rivers State await further clarity regarding the alleged offences that prompted this swift political action.
