The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has made an unwavering commitment to eradicate the presence of fake and quack doctors in the state, ensuring the integrity of the medical profession.
During a press conference held at the NMA secretariat on Monday as part of the 2023 ‘Physicians Week’ activities, Dr Madaki David Sheyin, the state chairman of the NMA, sternly warned that the medical body would staunchly combat the menace of fake medical doctors and quacks, leaving no room for their operations.
With determination and resolve, the NMA chairman asserted that they would not rest until the healthcare sector receives the necessary reforms from the government. Dr Sheyin emphasized that the poor conditions of the health sector have a direct impact on the association’s work. Thus, he stressed the urgent need for improvement for the benefit of not just the medical professionals but also the patients they serve.
The theme of this year’s ‘Physicians Week’ is ‘Elevating Health Care Excellence: Fighting Medical Quackery and Reinforcing Professional Standards’.
In line with this theme, the NMA has devised a comprehensive plan to collaborate with relevant stakeholders and eradicate all forms of quackery in the state. The association is committed to holding its members accountable and constantly reminding them of the importance of upholding professionalism. The NMA chairman emphasized the need for every member to support the association’s efforts in eliminating all forms of quackery.
Furthermore, the NMA has launched an extensive awareness campaign to educate the public about the activities of quacks and the dangers of engaging with them.
Dr Sheyin also expressed his displeasure with the media’s tendency to conduct trials of Nigerian doctors in the court of public opinion. He urged that the rule of law be observed and due process followed in addressing any grievances or in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
Regarding the responsibility of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Sheyin emphasized that any case against a practicing doctor in Nigeria should be forwarded to the Registrar of the MDCN for appropriate action. The council is the official body designated by law to handle such matters.
