Gunmen believed to be members of the notorious extremist group, Boko Haram, have brazenly attacked the peaceful village of Ngurokayya in Yobe State’s Geidam Local Government Area. This appalling incident took place on Tuesday, leaving the community in a state of shock and distress.
As the details of this harrowing attack are still emerging, the number of casualties remains unknown. The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Mohammed Goje, verified the unfortunate assault through a post on his official Facebook page.
According to Dr. Goje, the suspected insurgents launched their assault on the quiet border community of Ngurokayya, situated in the Kusur Damakarwa Ward of Geidam LGA. This village, approximately 10 kilometres away from Gumsa, bore witness to loss of lives, as well as several individuals sustaining severe injuries. To compound the tragedy, the attackers proceeded to set the town ablaze, forcing terrified residents to flee for their lives to safer locations.
The Yobe State Government, in collaboration with SEMA and the local government authority, has rapidly mobilized strategic teams to provide immediate assistance to the affected community. These dedicated teams are working tirelessly to ensure the well-being and safety of women and children, as well as conducting a thorough assessment of the impacted areas. Food supplies, non-food items (NFIs), and essential consumables are being distributed to those in need.
As the situation unfolds, the security agencies have been duly informed, and measures are being put in place to restore calm and bring perpetrators of this heinous act to justice. Meanwhile, the government and people of Yobe State express their deepest condolences to the Ngurokayya community, the entire Geidam LGA, and all the victims affected by this mindless act of brutality.
Some residents of the area have speculated that this attack may be a retaliatory act following the recent killing of two marauding Boko Haram insurgents in Geidam by the valiant troops of the 159 Battalion. The conflict between the state’s security forces and the extremist group continues to intensify, as the brave soldiers work tirelessly to protect innocent lives and maintain peace in the region.
