The Nigerian Senate is currently conducting screening exercises for nominees presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). These individuals, totaling ten in number, are undergoing thorough scrutiny by the upper legislative chamber. If confirmed, they will be assigned to different states to fulfill their primary responsibilities.
During the proceedings, Senate Leader Michael Bamidele Opeyemi drew the chamber’s attention to Section 154 (1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution, as amended. Opeyemi emphasized the importance of confirming the president’s nominations in accordance with the provisions of the constitution.
The nominees being screened by the Senate are as follows:
- Mr Etekamba Umoren – Akwa Ibom
- Mr Isah Shaka Ehimeakne – Edo
- Barr. Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola – Ekiti
- Mr Abubakar Ahmed Ma’ali – Gombe
- Mr. Shehu Wahab – Kwara
- Mr Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindem – Lagos
- Mr Aminu Kasimi Idris – Nasarawa
- Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq – Niger
- Dr. Anugbum Onuoha – Rivers
- Mr Abubakar Fawa Dambo – Zamfara
The nominees have made themselves available for screening proceedings, which commenced on Wednesday. Once the screening process is completed, the Committee of the whole will consider their confirmation.
