The United Kingdom has officially acknowledged Nigeria as a growing regional and global powerhouse. During the 2023 Cabinet Retreat held for Ministers and all Top Government functionaries, British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, expressed this sentiment in a goodwill message. He emphasized the UK’s renewed partnership with Nigeria, recognizing the significance of the most populous nation in Africa to the United Kingdom.
“I would like to recognize Nigeria as a developing regional and global powerhouse,” stated Dr Montgomery. He further predicted that Nigeria will likely become the third-largest country in the world by the year 2050. Highlighting the shared history and commitment to democratic politics, as well as mutual interests in defense, security, trade, and investment, the High Commissioner emphasized the strong people-to-people links that unite the UK and Nigeria. He also emphasized the importance of Nigerians in the diaspora, the creative industry, and sports stars in shaping the cultural fabric of the United Kingdom.
“We have a strong mutual accountability development agreement at both the federal and state levels, focusing on health, education, job creation, and government effectiveness,” Dr Montgomery added, underscoring the commitment between the two nations.
The UK High Commissioner affirmed the British government’s continuous support for Nigeria, emphasizing that it will be conducted in the spirit of mutual respect. He commended President Tinubu’s initiatives to enhance economic stability and guide the country towards a more prosperous growth trajectory. Dr Montgomery also praised the clarity of purpose provided by the eight Presidential Priorities established by the current administration.
“President Tinubu’s administration inherited significant challenges during a difficult time when people are hurting and have high expectations for better outcomes, particularly in the global context. The eight priorities under the renewed eight-point agenda, along with the identification of plans and performance indicators by the policy advisory committee, provide clarity of purpose,” stated the UK High Commissioner.
Expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s priorities, Dr Montgomery believes that they can alleviate the constraints on the entrepreneurial spirit and extend a helping hand to those in need. He expressed optimism that these measures will propel Nigeria forward.
The recognition of Nigeria’s ascend as a prominent global force signifies the growing influence and potential of the nation on the world stage. It serves as an encouragement to all Nigerians and the international community, inspiring continued collaboration and development.
