Lagos State Government Empowers Teachers with 21st Century Methodology Skills

The Lagos State government is taking proactive measures to enhance the quality of education in the state by organizing a capacity-building program for both public and private secondary school teachers. The program aims to equip teachers with the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly changing education landscape and improve students’ academic performance.

With the theme “Equipping Educators with Enquiry-Based Methodology and Accuracy Skills in the 21st Century Classroom,” the opening ceremony of the event was attended by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Ali-Balogun. He emphasized the need for teachers to adapt their teaching practices to meet the demands of the modern educational system.

The training, which is a public-private partnership known as the Casio Model School Project, will provide teachers with the opportunity to upgrade their skills. The Commissioner highlighted the importance of inquiry-based methodology in empowering students to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, and critically analyze information. He also stressed the significance of accuracy skills in an era where students need to differentiate between fact and fiction and engage in rigorous research.

Addressing the participants, the Commissioner urged them to embrace the challenges ahead and commit to their professional growth. He emphasized that by working together, teachers can create classrooms that inspire, empower, and prepare young learners for the complexities of the 21st century.

The program has received commendation from the partners involved, with Mr Tayo Osiyemi expressing gratitude to the Lagos State government for the opportunity to impact knowledge in teachers. He revealed that plans are underway to construct Casio labs in the other five Education Districts of the state and provide participants with Casio calculators to enhance their training.

In his address of welcome, Mr Abayomi Abolaji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, encouraged participants to make the most of the capacity-building program to improve teaching and learning in the state.

This initiative by the Lagos State government signifies its commitment to the advancement of education and the development of teachers who play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Lagos state.
