Uganda’s military forces have successfully neutralized a group of militants responsible for the brutal murder of two tourists and their local guide in the Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Army spokesperson has confirmed that at least 11 militants, including the attackers, were eliminated during a recent operation.
In the tragic incident that occurred on 17th October, British citizen David Barlow and his South African wife Emmaretia Geyer were mercilessly shot and killed during their honeymoon. The armed assailants responsible for this heinous act belonged to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group operating in the region.
Eric Alyai, a Ugandan tour guide who tragically lost his life in the attack, leaves behind his wife and one-year-old child, adding to the profound sadness caused by this senseless act of violence.
Following the incident, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) wasted no time in launching an extensive operation to track down the militants involved. Their efforts proved successful when the attackers were intercepted and eliminated on Tuesday night. The encounter took place near Lake Edward, which lies in close proximity to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to Lt Col Deo Akiiki, the spokesperson for the UPDF, the operation targeted a faction of the ADF responsible for the tourist killings. However, the military remains vigilant and continues its pursuit of other splinter groups affiliated with ADF.
The ADF is a rebel organization linked to the Islamic State. Although the group primarily operates in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it also maintains a presence in western Uganda. This poses a security threat not only to Uganda but also to the wider region.
This is not the first time the ADF has resorted to such horrifying acts of violence. In a shocking attack earlier this year, ADF fighters raided a Ugandan school and mercilessly took the lives of 41 innocent children.
The swift and successful response by the Ugandan military in eliminating the attackers brings a sense of justice to the grieving families and sends a strong message that acts of terrorism will not be tolerated. The operation serves as a reminder of the government’s commitment to the safety and security of its citizens and visitors alike.
As the nation mourns the loss of innocent lives, it is crucial to recognize the bravery and dedication of the Ugandan armed forces in their tireless efforts to protect the country’s people and its pristine natural wonders. The resilience displayed in the face of adversity demonstrates Uganda’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.
