By Gloria Essien, Abuja

The Committee on Urban and Rural Development is dedicated to ensuring that Nigerian cities adhere to comprehensive master plans. Led by Chairman Awaji-Inombek Abiante, the committee made this commitment during its inaugural meeting in Abuja.

Abiante emphasized that the committee will collaborate with state governments, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to address urban disasters across the country. He stated, “It is our intention to liaise and perform our oversight duties as required and backed by the law and all relevant instruments. A work plan is being prepared by the secretariat and will be considered in our next sitting. We have also received a referral which we will start working on immediately. We need to work as a team,” said Abiante.

Abiante urged committee members to contribute their individual expertise and experience to guide the committee’s direction, stating, “All hands should come on deck as we are all working towards the same goal. Therefore, all contributions made will be welcomed,” he added.

He also highlighted the areas of jurisdiction of the Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning, as enshrined in the Standing Order.

Members of the committee pledged their commitment to working with the chairman to ensure the committee’s success.
