Ghanaian Stephen Amegashie Jnr Appointed to Africa Taekwondo Union Technical Committee

The Africa Taekwondo Union (AFTU) has recently announced the appointment of Mr. Stephen Amegashie Jnr, the Technical Director of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF), as a member of its prestigious Technical Committee. With a wealth of experience and numerous achievements under his belt, Master Amegashie, a 6th Dan black belt holder, will be serving in this role until 2025.

In a letter dated October 13, the AFTU expressed their confidence in Master Amegashie’s expertise and leadership abilities. They specifically highlighted the importance of his contribution to ensuring the proper supervision of various aspects such as games, referees, para taekwondo, medical support, anti-doping measures, coaches, and athletes committees.

The letter, signed by AFTU President and World Taekwondo Vice President IDE Issaka, not only wished Master Amegashie Jnr well but also emphasized the significance of his role. “It is my hope that Master Amegashie will leave an indelible mark on the committee and follow in the footsteps of GTF President Frederick Lartey Otu, who has made significant contributions to the sport. I have no doubt that your expertise will elevate taekwondo to new heights.”

The responsibilities of the AFTU Technical Committee are wide-ranging and crucial to the development and management of taekwondo competitions. Among their duties, the committee studies the organization and management of combat sport competitions, as well as the safety and performance of equipment. Furthermore, they are tasked with exploring innovative techniques that can enhance taekwondo competitions.

Expressing his delight at this appointment, an elated Master Amegashie shared his excitement with Times Sports. He recognized the timing of this opportunity, with the African Senior Championships and the African Games drawing closer. “These events are platforms through which I hope to contribute my expertise and ensure they live up to their billing. Ultimately, my position at the continental level should inspire my fellow taekwondo practitioners to reach greater heights in their careers.”

Adding to Ghana’s growing significance in the world of taekwondo, the country is set to host the prestigious African Games in March 2024. Taekwondo will feature as one of the disciplines in the competition, further highlighting the importance of Master Amegashie’s role in the AFTU Technical Committee.

As Master Amegashie takes on this new responsibility, his appointment not only showcases his remarkable achievements within the Ghana Taekwondo Federation but also solidifies Ghana’s presence and influence in the sport at the continental level.
