Voter Registration Weekend: Home Affairs Extends Operating Hours for ID and Passport Collections

In preparation for the upcoming voter registration weekend, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa has announced extended operating hours to enable citizens to collect their identification documents and passports.

To ensure the convenience of its clients, the department is urging individuals who have been waiting for their identification documents for three weeks or more to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting their local Home Affairs office.

Specifically, on Saturday, 4 November 2023, and Saturday, 11 November 2023, the offices will be open from 8am to 1pm exclusively for the collection of smart ID cards and passports.

In an effort to alleviate the pressure on clients, Home Affairs has introduced dedicated counters for collections in larger offices that process smart ID cards and passports. This will help reduce queues and expedite the document retrieval process.

Clients now have the option to book collection appointments before visiting the offices through the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS), available on the DHA website (www.dha.gov.za). For those who are unable to make appointments, walk-ins are also welcome, and assistance will be provided to collect their IDs and passports.

Furthermore, during the voter registration weekend on 18 and 19 November 2023, ID services will be available at all Home Affairs offices. To assist voters, the operating hours of Home Affairs offices will be aligned with those of the Electoral Commission (IEC). This ensures that individuals can collect their applied-for IDs or apply for Temporary Identification Certificates, which are necessary to register for the upcoming 2024 national and provincial elections.

The IEC is committed to making nearly all voting stations accessible during the voter registration weekend. This initiative aims to not only enroll new voters but also allow existing ones to verify their registration details. Station-based registration ensures equal access to participating in the democratic process.

Don’t miss this opportunity to collect your IDs and passports from Home Affairs during the extended operating hours. It’s the perfect time to ensure you have the necessary documentation to exercise your right to vote in the upcoming elections.
