A renowned Gynaecologist, Dr Ayodele Ademola, has emphasized the importance of dietary and lifestyle modifications in effectively managing erectile dysfunction. Dr Ademola, who serves as the Medical Director of the esteemed Strong Tower Hospital and Advanced Fertility Centre in Lagos, shared his insights during an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to Dr Ademola, diet plays a significant role in the development of erectile dysfunction, also known as ED. He highlighted that certain foods that contribute to diabetes can also correlate with potency issues, as diabetes is a recognized cause of erectile dysfunction.

In addition, Dr Ademola explained that diets high in saturated fats are associated with heart disease, asserting that men with heart conditions are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction compared to their counterparts without these ailments.

Erectile dysfunction is a prevalent medical disorder that is rapidly growing in global prominence. In fact, experts estimate that the worldwide prevalence of ED will reach a staggering 322 million cases by the year 2025.

Dr Ademola dispelled the common misconception that the consumption of sugary and sweet foods alone can lead to erectile dysfunction, affirming that diabetes is the primary catalyst for this condition.

“Unless an individual is diabetic, the mere consumption of sugary items will not directly cause potency problems,” clarified Dr Ademola. “However, obesity and diabetes are indeed risk factors for erectile dysfunction. Poor eating habits can contribute to weight gain, ultimately leading to potency issues.”

He stressed the importance of raising awareness about the prevalence of erectile dysfunction, urging affected individuals not to panic. Both diabetes and anxiety are major contributors to impotence, so understanding that the condition is common can alleviate undue worry.

“Maintaining good overall health is crucial,” advised Dr Ademola. “Engaging in healthy activities and following a balanced diet are paramount.”

Dr Ademola recommended a range of lifestyle modifications to reduce the risk of developing conditions that contribute to erectile dysfunction, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. These changes include adopting regular exercise, consuming a varied and nutritious diet, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and refraining from tobacco use.

“It is essential to prioritize healthy lifestyle habits,” concluded Dr Ademola. “By incorporating these practices into daily life, individuals can significantly improve their overall wellbeing and manage erectile dysfunction effectively.”
