PTAD Pays N1bn Accrued Arrears to 7,091 Pensioners

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has successfully disbursed a total of ₦1.023 billion to 7,091 deserving pensioners from the Power and Transport Sectors of the Parastatals Pensions Department (PaPD). This significant payment from PTAD represents 39 percent of the pension arrears that were owed to these dedicated individuals, covering the period from August 2015 to September 2023.

As confirmed by Gbenga Ajayi, the head of Corporate Communications at PTAD, this much-awaited disbursement is the result of meticulous computation of the monthly pension that each pensioner of the PaPD is entitled to. This calculation takes into account vital factors such as their career details, salary structure, and applicable pension increments. Through this careful evaluation process, PTAD has thankfully been able to ensure that these pensioners receive the accurate and just pension they rightfully deserve.

It is worth noting that PTAD conducted a thorough back-end computation to accurately determine the arrears that were owed to the 7,091 pensioners in question. This lead to the discovery of an alarming discrepancy in their payments, with PTAD identifying that the pensioners were consistently being underpaid based on the payroll it inherited. This revelation highlights the importance of such computations in rectifying any unfair treatment or oversight that may have occurred.

In response to this issue, Chioma Ejikeme, the executive secretary of PTAD, affirmed the mandatory nature of the back-end computation. She underlined the importance of fairness, equity, and justice in ensuring that every pensioner receives their rightful pension amount. Furthermore, Ms. Ejikeme assures all federal pensioners governed by the Defined Benefit Scheme that the Federal Government remains fully committed to their welfare.

In line with this commitment, it is gratifying to hear that PTAD will continue to diligently disburse all arrears until each and every accrued pension arrear is fully liquidated, subject to the availability of government funding. By taking such proactive measures, PTAD is demonstrating a sincere dedication to addressing the long-standing issues concerning the welfare of pensioners in Nigeria.

It is heartening to witness the efforts made by the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate to rectify the underpayment of pensioners in the Power and Transport Sectors. This milestone payment of ₦1.023 billion signifies not only a step towards financial justice but also offers a glimmer of hope for those who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation. With continued support and commitment from the Federal Government, it is our sincere hope that the welfare of pensioners in Nigeria will continue to be prioritized, ensuring a dignified and secure future for those who have contributed so much.
