The Ikot Ekpene Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akwa Ibom State is set to launch a National Open University Study Centre in the near future. This initiative has been made possible through the generous donation and installation of six computer sets and internet accessories by the Obijackson Foundation, a charitable organization.
Richard Metong, the Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Command, explained in a recent statement that the purpose of this program is to transform the lives of incarcerated individuals and contribute to their successful reintegration into society.
The collaboration between the foundation and the custodial center has led to the launch of the Inmates’ Rehabilitation and Empowerment Programme with the theme “Imprisonment for Correction: A Call for Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Inmates for a Better Society.” This program aims to equip inmates with the necessary skills and resources to contribute meaningfully to society upon their release.
A total of 13 inmates from the four custodial centers in the command, whose fines were paid by the foundation, have benefited from the empowerment program. These inmates have been certified by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity in various vocational skills such as laundry, vulcanizing, welding, and barbing.
The statement further revealed, “They were also given start-up cheques of one hundred and fifty thousand (N150,000) naira each and vocational tools for the various trades learned in the facility.”
Pamela Egbo, the Executive Director of the Obijackson Foundation, emphasized the importance of reformation and rehabilitation as the key to providing inmates with lasting and sustainable lives, transforming them into better citizens.
Julius Ezugwu, the Controller of Corrections, expressed appreciation on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, for the partnership between the foundation and custodial center. He also acknowledged the provision of relief items and drugs for the well-being of the inmates.
Archibong Ekong, the Officer in Charge of the Center, highlighted the importance of the rehabilitation and empowerment program in addressing the anxiety among inmates and giving them a second chance to become better citizens in society.
