Gov Abdullahi Pushes for Legislative Reforms to Revive Mining Sector

In a drive to revitalize Nigeria’s mining sector, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has advocated for a comprehensive and sustainable law that will bring about positive transformation in the industry.

Governor Sule, while addressing the members of the House of Representatives Committee on Solid Minerals at the Government House in Lafia, the state capital, highlighted the significance of solid minerals and agriculture in shaping the country’s future.

During the meeting, Governor Sule emphasized the need for a thorough examination of various aspects related to mineral deposits across the nation. He stressed the importance of developing tailor-made solutions that consider the unique characteristics of each state in the federation.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee, Mr. Gaza Jonathan Gbefwi, acknowledged the strategic role Nasarawa State plays in the solid minerals industry. He emphasized that the state was the committee’s first priority due to its rich mineral resources.

Governor Sule’s call for a realistic legal framework aligns with the government’s efforts to promote mining activities and attract investments in the sector. The proposed reforms aim to create an enabling environment for growth, enhance transparency and accountability, and ultimately drive economic development.

The mining sector in Nigeria has immense potential, with abundant mineral resources including gold, tin, coal, limestone, and many others. However, it has been faced with challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, inefficient regulatory frameworks, and illegal mining activities.

The implementation of a robust mining law will not only address these challenges but also encourage local and foreign investors to explore the untapped potential in the sector. This, in turn, will generate employment opportunities, boost revenue generation, and contribute to the overall growth of the Nigerian economy.

The revitalization of the mining sector aligns with the federal government’s diversification agenda, aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on oil revenue. By exploiting the vast mineral resources available, Nigeria can leverage its natural wealth to create sustainable economic prosperity.

The proposed legislative reforms serve as a crucial step towards repositioning the mining sector as a key driver of economic growth and development in Nigeria. With concerted efforts from the government, lawmakers, and industry stakeholders, the mining sector can become a catalyst for transformative change and contribute to the nation’s journey towards self-sufficiency in the coming years.
