NFF Suspends 14 Referees for Poor Performance

In a major move to improve the standard of officiating in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the referees committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has taken a bold step by suspending 14 referees due to their poor performance. This decision, aimed at maintaining fairness and integrity in our beloved sport, was announced in a statement released by the NFF on Monday.

Over the course of the season, there have been numerous questionable calls made by referees, which have raised concerns among players, coaches, and fans alike. One of the most recent incidents involved Imamu Maliki’s controversial decision to disallow a seemingly legitimate goal scored by Remo Stars against Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, this past Sunday. Such decisions have not only affected the outcome of matches but have also casted doubts on the competence of the referees.

The suspension of these referees will remain in effect until a thorough investigation is conducted into their performance. The NFF referees committee is committed to ensuring that only the best officials are entrusted with the responsibility of officiating matches. By holding these referees accountable for their poor performance, the committee aims to send a clear message that such substandard conduct will not be tolerated.

In a bid to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the referees’ performance, the committee has requested full videos of all the games in question. This measure will aid in the proper analysis and assessment of the referees’ decisions. It is an important step towards identifying areas that require improvement and ensuring that future matches are officiated with the highest level of professionalism and accuracy.

The NFF is dedicated to continually improving the quality of football in Nigeria and restoring the confidence of players, coaches, and fans in the integrity of our league. By taking decisive action against underperforming referees, the NFF is demonstrating its commitment to fair play and the pursuit of excellence. It is our collective responsibility to support this endeavor and work together to elevate Nigerian football to new heights.
