The House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory has called on the Minister, Nyesom Wike, to give top priority to the security of lives and property in the nation’s capital. In addition, the Committee has urged him to focus on boosting revenue generation to support the infrastructural development of the FCT.

Muktar Betara, the Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, made these recommendations during the inaugural meeting of the panel in Abuja. Emphasizing the need for dedicated effort, experience, and networking, Betara stressed the importance of supporting the development agenda of the FCT and ensuring the welfare of its residents.

The oversight role of the Committee encompasses the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and its various agencies such as the Abuja Geographical Information System (AGIS), the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abuja Metropolitan Management Authority, Abuja Investment Company Ltd, FCT Mass Housing Department, and FCT Pension Board, among others. The responsibilities also extend to the planning and development of the FCT, secondary and tertiary education, public transport system, and the annual budget estimate of the FCTA.

According to Betara, “Abuja is losing revenue, but this Committee will collaborate with the Minister to ensure an increase in revenue for infrastructure development in the FCT.” He further highlighted the Minister’s commitment to addressing the issue of estates in Abuja lacking title documents and the expedited resolution of this matter within 14 days. He stressed the significance of revenue generation and commended the Minister’s assurance to enhance revenue and address pertinent issues.

In a bid to emphasize the need for prompt action, Betara drew attention to the proactive approach taken by Vehicle Inspection Officers in notifying car owners for renewal before the expiration of vehicular particulars. Furthermore, he urged property owners with undeveloped land to promptly pay ground rent without delay.

Sharing his perspective, Saidu Abdullahi, a member of the Committee representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency, Niger State, expressed the need to rejuvenate the nation’s capital. He highlighted the untapped potential of the FCT, underscoring the necessity for collaborative efforts to restore its former glory. Abdullahi also emphasized the importance of effective collaboration, citing challenges faced in previous assemblies and reaffirming the Committee’s commitment to revitalizing Abuja.

Addressing the plight of the less privileged, Regina Akume, a member representing Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, appealed to the FCTA to exercise restraint in the demolition of illegal structures within the city, taking into consideration the impact of the removal of subsidies. Akume emphasized the prevailing hardship faced by the populace and urged caution in the ongoing demolition activities.

In response to the Committee’s recommendations, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of FCT, Adesola Olusade, expressed gratitude for the Committee’s dedication to the development of the Capital Territory. He encouraged the committee members to diligently address pending bills related to the development and decongestion of the city capital. Regarding Akume’s plea, he acknowledged the concern, highlighting the risks associated with illegal structures that have become havens for criminal activities and emphasizing the need to address these challenges.
