Activists on “Peace Boat” in Egypt Demand Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

Peace activists aboard the “Peace Boat” campaign for a prompt ceasefire in Gaza, as the situation continues to escalate, causing immense suffering to the people in the region.

The 77,000-ton “Peace Boat”, also known as “Pacific World”, operated by Japan-based luxury cruise company and non-governmental organization Peace Boat, arrived at Port with a clear message displayed on a giant banner: “Stop Killing Gaza”. The activists passionately chanted “Free Gaza” and “Save Gaza”, voicing their solidarity with the affected people, particularly the children.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, thousands of Palestinians are fleeing south from Gaza City, carrying only the clothes on their backs, as the Israeli army instructs those in the north to move south. The dire situation has led to severe shortages of essential supplies like food, water, fuel, and electricity, plunging the inhabitants into a struggle for survival with widespread telecommunications blackouts.

The recent deadly attack by Hamas militants, resulting in a significant number of casualties including civilians, has escalated tensions. Israel’s retaliatory measures have included airstrikes and a ground offensive, with the United Nations reporting extensive damage to vital facilities and a devastating loss of lives, with a significant number being women and children.

The “Peace Boat” had previously made similar pleas during its visits to Turkey and Greece, making a final stop in Port Said, Egypt. However, the Israeli Prime Minister’s statements indicate a reluctance to embrace a widespread ceasefire, instead suggesting “little pauses” in the conflict. In the midst of these developments, the U.S. has been exerting pressure for “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for the safety and well-being of the displaced population.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has created a humanitarian catastrophe, prompting calls from the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken for Israel not to reoccupy Gaza after the hostilities cease. Additionally, key elements for sustainable peace, including the prevention of forcible displacement of Palestinians, the cessation of terrorism activities, and the unification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority, have been emphasized.

The history of the region reflects the longstanding plight of the Palestinian people, marked by forced displacement and upheaval, with the events of the 1948 war and the 1967 Mideast war significantly shaping the current refugee crisis. The diaspora of Palestinians spans across various countries, bearing witness to their enduring struggle for stability and a place to call home.

As the conflict persists, it is imperative for the international community to intensify efforts towards a peaceful resolution, ensuring the safety and well-being of the people in the region.
