The Federal Government has swiftly rejected allegations made by the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, concerning President Bola Tinubu’s handling of the N2.17 trillion supplementary budget. Obi accused Tinubu of being unsympathetic to the plight of Nigerians, asserting that critical emergencies and pressing national needs were overlooked in the budgetary allocations.
In response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, refuted these claims, describing the budget as a bold and pragmatic response to Nigeria’s economic challenges. He urged Obi to acquaint himself with the budget details, highlighting allocations for crucial sectors such as security, agriculture, housing, wage increases, student loan schemes, and social safety nets.
These provisions, according to Idris, are aimed at fortifying the country’s economic foundations and enhancing the well-being of Nigerians. Furthermore, Idris emphasized that the supplementary budget reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting government functions, addressing security needs, and expediting Nigeria’s economic recovery following the fuel subsidy removal. He urged the opposition to exercise balanced judgment and refrain from distorting facts for political gain. He reaffirmed the budget’s alignment with the needs and expectations of Nigerians, emphasizing the meticulous scrutiny of each item to ensure transparent and efficient use of public funds.
The government’s response sheds light on the rigorous process and the rationale behind the supplementary budget. It counters claims of insensitivity and underscores the administration’s commitment to accountability and the welfare of Nigerians.
