FG Appeals for Urgent Aid as Humanitarian Crisis Ravages Benue State

The plea for immediate intervention in the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Benue has been made by the Federal Government, calling upon all development partners and donor agencies to swiftly respond to the escalating situation.

Speaking during the distribution of relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Ichwa Camp in Makurdi, Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized the urgent need for assistance due to the severe hardships experienced by the IDPs in Benue State.

Dr. Edu stressed the necessity for the Federal Government to officially correspond with both local and international aid organizations, appealing for their immediate involvement in addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in Benue.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, she stated, “The humanitarian situation in Benue is unacceptable, people must be adequately resettled in their ancestral homes. The Benue Government cannot do this alone.”

Furthermore, she assured that her office would closely monitor the interventions of these partners in Benue and announced an adjustment in the government’s plans to commence construction of resettlement homes at two locations, instead of the initially proposed single site, in response to the prevailing circumstances.

Dr. Edu also expressed unwavering commitment to the plight of the displaced persons, affirming, “For the next six months, all my thoughts will be about you and how to provide a solution to what is going on here. We have worked with the governor to get land to build low-cost homes for you.”
