INEC Reassures Unhindered Governorship Elections Amidst Labour Strike

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the ongoing organized labour strike will not impede the upcoming governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states.

Emanuella Ben-Opara, the Head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity at the INEC Imo State office, conveyed this assurance to the press in Owerri, emphasizing the commission’s readiness for the forthcoming elections in the state.

Ben-Opara highlighted that the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), which is not affiliated with the labour union, has provided reassurance to the Commission. She stressed that vehicles sourced from the NURTW are already in place to facilitate the transportation of personnel and materials to all polling units.

Furthermore, the Imo State head of the Department of Voter Education and Publicity revealed that all Registration Area Centers have been activated for the seamless deployment of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials on Friday night.

In addressing security concerns, Ben-Opara disclosed that security agencies have pinpointed potential flashpoint areas. She urged residents not to succumb to fear, asserting that the security agencies have pledged to maintain a conducive environment throughout the entire electoral process.

With these measures in place, INEC remains resolute in ensuring the smooth conduct of the governorship elections, unaffected by the ongoing labour strike.
