As voters in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States exercise their franchise in the off-cycle gubernatorial elections today, the political landscape is ablaze with anticipation and fervor.

These crucial elections reverberate across the South East, South South, and North Central regions, wielding significant influence on the political trajectory of Nigeria.

In both Imo and Bayelsa, the incumbents are fervently vying for a second term, while Kogi State stands poised to anoint a new leader.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is resolute in its quest to assert dominance in Kogi and Imo, whereas the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is steadfast in its pursuit to maintain a grip on power in Bayelsa.

Notably, Bayelsa has been a bastion for the PDP since 1999, reclaiming authority swiftly after a temporary setback in 2019, owing to a Supreme Court ruling.

Gov. Douye Diri, seeking re-election under the PDP banner, confronts formidable opponents, including former Gov. Timipre Sylva of the APC and Udengs Eradiri of the Labour Party (LP).

Meanwhile, in Kogi, the electorate is poised to anoint a new helmsman following Gov. Yahaya Bello’s conclusion of his constitutionally mandated tenures.

The APC’s standard-bearer, Ododo Usman Ahmed, backed by the incumbent, contends with Murtala Yakubu Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dino Melaye of the PDP, and Leke Abejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In Imo, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has greenlit 17 candidates for today’s gubernatorial showdown.

The leading contenders include Gov. Uzodinma of the APC, Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP, and Labour Party’s Athan Achonu.
