Jonathan Urges National Assembly to End Off-season Elections in Nigeria

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has made a compelling call for the Nigerian National Assembly to put a stop to off-season elections in the country. Speaking to journalists after participating in the ongoing governorship election in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, on Saturday, Jonathan highlighted the necessity of enacting a law to eliminate off-season elections from the Nigerian political landscape.

Expressing his concern, Jonathan emphasized that the continuation of off-season elections, as stipulated in the Nigerian constitution, could eventually lead to even the presidential election being conducted during off-peak periods.

“I am deeply concerned about off-season elections, and I appeal to the National Assembly to take decisive action to bring an end to this practice,” Jonathan remarked, underlining that it does not align with global best practices. He further stressed, “If we persist with off-season elections due to our current legislation, it may result in even the presidential election being held during off-season periods.”
