The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, has confirmed the tragic deaths of four personnel at the hands of suspected sea pirates in Rivers State.
Addressing troops of the NSCDC Command in Rivers, Mr Audi expressed his condolences and urged the personnel to remain focused and courageous in their fight against crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism despite the attacks by gunmen.
He reassured the command and the families of the deceased officers, stating, “This is part of the hazards of the job, and the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has assured that the blood of the gallant men will not be in vain.”
While refraining from disclosing operational strategies, Mr Audi emphasized the collaborative efforts with sister security agencies to ensure that justice is served for the fallen officers.
The Commandant General also mentioned that the corps had initiated the process to deliver the benefits of the deceased victims to their next of kin.
Commending President Bola Tinubu for bolstering the capacity and operational efficiency of the corps through approvals for the provision of gun boats and improved welfare, Mr Audi urged the personnel to continue dedicating themselves to the service of the nation.
He reiterated his commitment to overcoming inherited challenges and highlighted the clearing of all backlogs of promotions and arrears of payment, emphasizing the introduction of career progression development courses and the promotion of officers based on merit and performance.
Mr Audi also addressed the long-standing issue of promotion stagnation and inadequate emoluments, indicating that the federal government is being engaged to review salaries and allowances, with payments of improved welfare packages expected to commence upon conclusion of the process.
Inspiring the new recruits, he stressed the significance of diligence, commitment, and loyalty while upholding the introduction of Standard Operating Procedures and a Code of Conduct to maintain discipline within the corps.
As the nation mourns the loss of these gallant officers, the NSCDC remains resolute in its dedication to upholding national security and protecting the lives and resources of the country.
