Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba’s Call for Peace and Justice in Palestine

In a powerful message delivered at a march in Cape Town in solidarity with Palestine, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba spoke out against the violence and injustice plaguing the Holy Land. He lamented the denial of people’s rights and the failure of leaders to seek a just solution for governing the land. The Archbishop stressed the urgent need to halt the indiscriminate killings and war crimes in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.

Addressing the global community, Archbishop Makgoba called for a cessation of arms supplies to the warring parties and urged the world to hold accountable any nation providing weapons to the conflict. He condemned the partiality of Western powers in the conflict and commended countries that have severed diplomatic ties with Israel, while also calling for a review of diplomatic relations with nations supplying arms.

The Archbishop emphasised the imperative of redirecting resources from war to peacemaking, advocating for an end to the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and unjust policies against Palestinians. He pledged the commitment of the church to pray and actively support an end to apartheid in the Holy Land, striving for a just and sustainable peace.

In a heartfelt appeal, Archbishop Makgoba brought attention to the plight of other suffering communities, such as those in Ukraine and Sudan. He highlighted the recent bombing of a church in Sudan, where thousands have lost their lives and millions have been displaced.

Despite the seemingly despairing global situations, the Archbishop urged unity and hope, drawing from scriptures to fortify the belief in the ultimate triumph of justice and the promise of peace for all humankind.
