High Cost of Flour Leads to Closure of Bakeries: Nigerians Struggle with Soaring Bread Prices

Nigeria is facing a severe crisis as the cost of flour and other baking ingredients skyrockets, forcing many bakeries to shut down and leaving families grappling with the exorbitant prices of bread. The popular staple has become a luxury for many as its affordability diminishes.

Amidst the struggle to keep their businesses afloat, bakery owners find themselves at a crossroads, torn between meeting the rising costs of production and ensuring customer satisfaction. The impact of the Russian-Ukraine war on global flour supply has exacerbated an already precarious situation, pushing many bakery owners to the brink.

In a candid conversation with Economy&Lifestyle, Mr. Abayomi Olorunfemi, a seasoned baker, lamented the harsh realities facing the industry. He revealed how the economic climate has compelled bakery owners to reduce the sizes of bread loaves while increasing prices in a bid to stay solvent. The frequency of bread price hikes in recent times has further strained the already burdened consumers, resulting in diminished patronage due to higher prices and reduced quality.

The dire consequences of this crisis are felt deeply by ordinary Nigerians. Mrs. Are Toluwalase, a mother of six, narrated how the spike in bread prices has impacted her family’s breakfast routine, compelling them to shift to more cost-effective alternatives like oats, yam, and eggs. Similarly, Mr. Aderotimi Samuel, a bakery owner with two establishments, was forced to shutter one of his bakeries in response to the escalating operational costs, including the soaring prices of flour and other essential ingredients.

The ripple effect of this crisis extends to suppliers as well. Mrs. Janet Omoh, a vendor of flour and baking ingredients, highlighted the daily increase in the cost of flour and other baking essentials. The drastic surge in prices, particularly for flour, margarine, sugar, salt, and yeast, has posed a significant challenge for individuals in the supply chain, straining their ability to sustain their businesses.

As the cost of flour continues to surge, the future of the bakery industry remains uncertain. The once ubiquitous sight of families enjoying freshly baked bread may soon become a distant memory unless meaningful intervention is undertaken to alleviate the financial strain on bakery owners and consumers alike.
