The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a prompt investigation into the tragic road accident that claimed the lives of four of its personnel on the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway. The officers, who were part of the NIS musical band and had just concluded an official performance in Kano, met with the fatal incident while returning to Abuja.
Dr. Dotun Aridegbe, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, officially confirmed the heartbreaking incident during a press briefing in Abuja. He revealed that out of the 11 personnel involved in the accident, four tragically lost their lives, while seven sustained various injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the Service, Aridegbe expressed deep regret over the loss of their colleagues and assured the public that an immediate investigation has been ordered by the Acting CGI to unravel the root cause of the accident. He stated, “We are committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and implementing necessary measures to avert such occurrences in the future.”
In addition to the ongoing investigation, arrangements for the respectful burial of the deceased personnel are underway. Furthermore, the Acting Comptroller General of Immigration, Caroline Adepoju, has instructed all Commands and Formation Heads to fly the NIS flag at half-mast for the next seven days as a mark of respect and remembrance for the fallen officers.
Aridegbe also announced a three-day mourning period in honour of their departed colleagues, emphasizing the NIS’ dedication to ensuring a befitting farewell for the deceased personnel.
