Baze University in Abuja has posthumously awarded Honorary Doctor of Science degrees to the late Maryam Babangida, wife of former Head of State Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, and Honorary Doctor of Letters to the late Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mohammed Bello.

During the 10th Convention Ceremony in Abuja, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kathleen Okafor, presented the awards in recognition of the impact both iconic figures had on the lives of many Nigerians.

Highlighting the university’s progress, Mrs. Okafor noted a significant increase in academic programmes from 72 in 2022 to 102, comprising 43 undergraduate courses, 41 postgraduate programmes, and 18 PhD programmes.

The ceremony also celebrated the graduation of 613 students, consisting of 388 undergraduates and 225 postgraduates, a testament to the university’s commitment to producing exceptional intellectuals.

Encouraging greater female participation in economic regeneration and resource management, Mrs. Okafor stressed the need for universities to impart relevant and ethical education, combatting societal issues such as poverty and breaches of the rule of law.

Urging the graduating students to prioritise self-development in their fields and engage in professional associations to enhance their digital skills, she emphasized the importance of equipping themselves for the digital era, innovation, and entrepreneurship to thrive in the modern workplace.

Overall, the conferring of posthumous awards served as a fitting tribute to these distinguished Nigerians, underscoring their enduring legacies and contributions to the nation.
