Organised Labour in Rivers State Directs Affiliates to Withdraw Services on Nov 14

The organised labour in Rivers State has affirmed its commitment to abide strictly by the resolutions made during the joint National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday in Abuja.

The NLC and TUC, in a collective statement, announced the directive to their affiliate unions to mobilise their members for a comprehensive shutdown of all workplaces, both in the public and private sectors, commencing on Tuesday.

In a press release signed by the state chairperson of NLC, Alex Agwanwor, and his TUC counterpart, Ikechukwu Onyefuru, it was stated that following an evaluation of the federal government’s response to several demands, including the lack of commitment to employing the principle of social dialogue in resolving trade disputes, the national secretariats of both congresses had mandated all affiliates at the state level to rally their members to withhold services from Tuesday, November 14, 2023, in a bid to reinforce the labour’s demands for an enhanced working environment.

The organised labour in Rivers State also emphasized the establishment of a task force to oversee the compliance of all unions and reminded workers that “injury to one is an injury to all.”

The statement asserts, “Following the collective resolution of the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) held on the 7th of November, 2023, declaring a nationwide industrial action with effect from Tuesday, 14 November 2023.”
