MTN Nigeria Chairman Reveals Telecom Sector Contributes 16% to Nigeria’s GDP

The chairman of MTN Nigeria, Dr Ernest Ndukwe, disclosed that the telecom sector now contributes over 16% to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), emphasising the sector’s substantial impact on the country’s economy.

Addressing participants at a two-day Premier Capital Markets Day Event in Abuja, organised by MTN, Mr Ndukwe further highlighted MTN’s vision 2025 strategy. He outlined the company’s evolution from a telecom to a technology business, with a renewed focus on building connectivity business and expanding into platform businesses.

“As the digital ecosystem continues to grow, MTN’s impact on the nation’s economy will continue to increase,” said Mr Ndukwe, underlining MTN’s position as the largest network operator in Nigeria and its commitment to delivering world-class ICT services while contributing to the nation’s economic development.

“Our customers and their needs are at the core of everything we do and plan for the future of the business. The MTN ecosystem has directly or indirectly created employment for over two million people, supporting livelihoods across the country,” he added.

Furthermore, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, expressed optimism that the country’s economic challenges are gradually coming to an end, urging stakeholders to engage in and benefit from the event.

Meanwhile, Timi Popoola, CEO of Nigeria Exchange Limited, highlighted the significance of the event in fostering closer ties between local and foreign investors, whilst deepening interactions with MTN. He also revealed the launch of a new service by MTN, *5474#, allowing access to a bouquet of options, including opening and closing prices of any security listed on the exchange.

“We hope that this is the first step of using a tool like this to invest in a capital market,” he remarked, signifying prospects for capital market investment facilitated by MTN’s innovative initiatives, and thus contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.

The declaration by MTN Nigeria’s Chairman, Dr Ernest Ndukwe, further solidifies the influential position of the telecom sector in shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape.
