Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has called on the Organized Labour, led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to suspend its nation-wide strike, while condemning the recent attack on NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
In a statement released by Zakari U. Mijinyawa, Head of Strategic Communication at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the NSA expressed particular concern about the impact of the strike on the everyday lives of Nigerians and its potential effects on economic security and other vital national interests.
The NLC president was assaulted on 1st November during a state-wide protest in Imo State. The strike was declared in response to what Mr. Ajaero described as “the persistent and egregious violations of the rights and privileges of workers in Imo State by the state government.”
The NSA revealed that several suspects have been arrested, and an investigation into the assault has been initiated.

The NSA’s statement further stated, “As soon as the NSA became aware of the challenges faced by the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joseph Ajaero, who was assaulted in Owerri, Imo State, immediate intervention was made.”
“The NSA deplores the incident and categorically condemns it as it goes against the rule of law and the principles of freedom of association and expression upheld by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.”
“The Federal Government will not condone such an act.”
“Following this incident, relevant authorities were instructed to conduct a thorough investigation into the assault and hold the culprits accountable.
“There have been some arrests made in connection with the case. The findings of the investigation will be disclosed once concluded.
“The Federal Government, through the Office of the NSA, therefore, urges the labour leadership to halt the ongoing strike and allow the ongoing dialogue process to run its course.”
