The Gombe State Police Command has ushered in a new era with the appointment of CP Hayatu Usman as the 22nd Commissioner of Police (CP) for the state. CP Usman assumed office on November 13, 2023, following the retirement of CP Oqua Etim on October 18, 2023, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60, as announced by the command.
CP Hayatu Usman, a seasoned officer, was born on February 12, 1965, in Kazaure local government area of Jigawa State. He holds a BSc in Economics/Sociology from Bayero University, Kano. His journey in the Nigerian Police Force began in 1992 as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the Nigerian Police Academy, Kaduna Annex.

Throughout his illustrious career, CP Usman has held various significant positions across the country, including Patrol and Guard Officer at ‘B’ Division in Bukuru, Jos, Plateau State. He also served in roles such as SCID Jos, OC Miango Police Station in Bassa LGA, Plateau State, DCO Oruwa division in Oyo State, DPO Central Police Station Gusau, and DPO Maitama division in FCT. Additionally, he served as the Area Commander, Zuru, in Kebbi State and DC DOPS Zone 8 HQ Lokoja. Before assuming the role of Commissioner of Police, he served as the DC Operations in Gombe State Command. His expertise is further bolstered by specialized training, including the Intermediate Command Course and Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos.
The new Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, has expressed his commitment to implementing proactive policing strategies and community policing to ensure a safer Gombe State. He has called for the support and cooperation of the general public in combating crime within the state.
CP Hayatu Usman’s First Official Engagement in Gona
In his first official engagement, CP Hayatu Usman organized and attended a town hall security meeting in the Gona Emirate region, Akko local government area. The meeting brought together community leaders from Tumfure, Tabra, and BCJ axis of Akko local government area, addressing the rising criminal activities in the areas and promoting community participation through effective community policing.

During the meeting, CP Hayatu Usman emphasized the crucial role of community policing in engaging the general public and their leaders in providing vital information to law enforcement agencies. He assured the residents of the area of his commitment to ensuring their safety and encouraged them to communicate with the police whenever necessary.
Several speakers at the meeting expressed their gratitude to CP Hayatu Usman for his presence and the opportunity to address the pressing issue of crime in the area. They pledged their unwavering support in the fight against criminal activities within their jurisdiction.

The Lamido of Gona, Alhaji Usman Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, commended the commissioner of police for his visit and promised his community’s collective assistance and cooperation in achieving a crime-free Gombe State.
