India drew inspiration from the stellar performances of Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami as they triumphed over a resolute New Zealand side to secure a spot in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, being held in their home country.
The clash unfolded on Wednesday in Mumbai, culminating in India’s victory over New Zealand by a formidable margin of 70 runs, after setting a challenging target of 398 runs in the tournament’s inaugural semifinal.
Initially, India appeared to have a firm grip on the game, buoyed by unwavering support from the vibrant home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium. They quickly thwarted New Zealand’s pursuit by dismissing both openers for a meagre 39 runs in the eighth over.
Nonetheless, the narrative turned unexpectedly when Daryl Mitchell showcased tenacity, crafting an arduous yet explosive century to spearhead New Zealand’s resurgence. This revival was complemented by an impressive display from their captain, Kane Williamson, who contributed 69 runs in a formidable 181-run partnership.
Undeterred by New Zealand’s fightback, India leveraged the advantage of a substantial target, ensuring access to the New Zealand batting lineup with the crucial wickets of Glenn Phillips and, ultimately, the dismissal of Mitchell in the 46th over.
In a remarkable demonstration of skill and determination, pace bowler Shami astounded with a stellar performance, claiming seven wickets to compensate for an earlier dropped catch off Williamson.
Shami emphasised his team’s unwavering resolve, “We were resolute in our determination not to squander the opportunity of clinching the home World Cup. We have come agonizingly close in the past, but this time, we were determined not to falter. Who can predict when such an opportunity will arise again?” These words came in the wake of Shami clinching the prestigious Player of the Match award.
