The increasing rate of suicide cases in Nigeria has raised concerns among law enforcement authorities, with the Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, Bright Edafe, drawing attention to the worrisome trend.
Edafe highlighted that the incidence of suicide, particularly among couples, has been on the rise in recent times.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police recounted a disturbing incident where a man, in the midst of assaulting his wife, tragically took his own life afterwards.
Furthermore, he shared the heartbreaking story of a 16-year-old girl who ended her life after facing the fear of retribution from her father for staying out late.
With these grievous accounts, Edafe appealed to Nigerians to prioritize their mental well-being, emphasizing that the real loss is suffered by the deceased individuals.
He urged the public to distance themselves from environments that do not foster happiness and tranquility, underscoring the importance of mental health awareness.
“There has been a recent surge in suicide cases, especially within marital relationships. We witnessed a distressing incident where a man, engaged in an altercation with his wife, subsequently took his own life inside their home, following the intervention of concerned neighbours.
“In another deeply saddening occurrence, a young girl of sixteen, fearing the consequences of returning home late, resorted to ending her own life after her attempts to placate her parents proved futile.
“It is imperative that we pay close attention to our mental well-being, as it is the individuals who succumb to such tragic decisions that truly suffer. Any environment that does not nurture peace should be avoided. Let us actively watch out for one another,” Edafe shared in a post on his social media platform.
