Security agencies in Nasarawa State have taken a proactive step to address the growing threat of student and lecturer abductions by introducing ‘Stop and Search’ points across tertiary institutions. The goal is to combat the rising incidents of abductions by unknown gunmen.
Following an extensive security meeting at the Government House in Lafia, stakeholders deliberated on strategies to tackle the escalating challenges of banditry and kidnappings in the state. This decision comes in response to the recent surge in targeted attacks on lecturers and students in various tertiary institutions within Nasarawa State.
High-profile cases such as the abduction of four undergraduate students and lecturers from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, NSUK, as well as the shooting and kidnapping of students at the Federal University of Lafia, have raised significant concerns.
Amidst these worrisome developments, Governor Abdullahi Sule initiated an expanded security meeting to urgently address this distressing trend and devise effective solutions to ensure the safety of students, lecturers, and staff in tertiary institutions.
As a result of the discussions, the meeting concluded to implement ‘Stop and Search’ points in and around the institutions. This strategic move is intended to bolster security measures and serve as a deterrent to criminal activities.
The introduction of these ‘Stop and Search’ points aims to establish a conspicuous and proactive security presence within the campuses and their environs. This initiative seeks to instill a sense of security and deter illicit activities that jeopardize the well-being of the academic community.
Furthermore, the heads of tertiary institutions in Nasarawa State have expressed their unwavering support and commitment to this new security policy. They underscored the critical significance of ensuring the safety and protection of both students and staff within the academic milieu.
