PDP Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Slide into Totalitarianism

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a warning, asserting that Nigeria is gradually spiraling into totalitarianism and anarchy under the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed deep concern regarding the APC’s purported agenda to establish a one-party state in the country.

The official statement, as conveyed through the party’s verified channels, accused a supposed cabal within the Presidency of making deliberate efforts to undermine vital democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary.

“The PDP raises an alert on the attempts and actions of a cabal within the Presidency aimed at undermining Nigeria’s democratic institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary, in their quest to impose a one-party state on Nigerians,” the statement highlighted.

Highlighting what it perceives as the unfolding anti-democratic scenario, the party cited not only the alleged manipulation of elections but also the contradictory judgments by electoral courts, particularly the Appeal Court. These verdicts, it contended, are at odds with the explicit provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act of 2022, as well as INEC’s Guidelines and Regulations for elections.

The PDP underscored the significance of upholding democracy as the government of the people, as expressed through their electoral will.

It implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the custodian of the government, to vocally disapprove of any actions or attempts capable of subduing democracy, eroding the rule of law, and compromising the independence of the judiciary, particularly regarding pending election matters before the courts.

Furthermore, the PDP called for a unified front to safeguard democracy, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.
