The Abia State government has taken the decisive step of suspending Eze Kanu Nwa Kanu, the traditional ruler of Ibom Isii in Arochukwu Local Government Area, over allegations of abusing his office.

According to a statement by Uzo Nwachukwu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the suspension was a result of the monarch’s violation of the Code of Conduct for Traditional Rulers and Autonomous Communities in Abia State.

The suspension order, referenced as MLGCA /CH/S.5/5.4151, highlighted the monarch’s flouting of established provisions, prompting the state government to establish a disciplinary committee to investigate his activities. The committee will also provide recommendations on the appropriate course of action.

The suspension letter to Eze Kanu stated, “You are hereby suspended from office as a traditional ruler, Ibom Isii, Arochukwu Kingdom, for flagrantly flouting the provisions of the Code of Conduct for Traditional Rulers in Abia State, and the Traditional Rulers and Autonomous Communities Law; via abuse of office and established cases of flagrant disregard of official directives of government.” It further added, “A disciplinary committee has been set up to further investigate your actions and advise the government on the next steps to be taken.”

Sources from Arochukwu revealed that Eze Kanu’s alleged involvement in the recent crowning of a factional claimant to the throne of Eze Aro may have contributed to his current predicament.
