The Nigerian National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has emphasized the crucial role of the media in addressing the security challenges in the country. Speaking at the 19th All Nigerian Editors Conference in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom state, he called for concerted efforts to combat the four major security challenges facing Nigeria.
Ribadu outlined the pressing issues as the Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, the southeast agitations, and the growing menace of oil theft in the Niger Delta, all of which are significantly impacting the peace and stability of Nigeria.
He stressed the need for better coordination, determination, and widespread support, particularly from the media, in combating these challenges which have persisted for over 15 years. Ribadu acknowledged the arduous task inherited by the government and underscored the debilitating impact of insecurity on the nation’s development.
Emphasizing the collective responsibility in overcoming these threats, Ribadu stated, “Everyone must show understanding because we are in it together; insecurity destroys everything and diverts attention from other crucial developmental issues of the Nation.”
Furthermore, Ribadu highlighted the government’s ongoing engagements with various stakeholders to address these challenges. He cited the significant increase in crude oil production from 900 barrels per day to 1.7 million barrels per day, underscoring the progress made in tackling crude oil theft in the south-south region since the current administration assumed office.
Regarding banditry and kidnapping, Ribadu indicated a substantial decline, evident in the decrease in criminal-related deaths from an estimated 1,000 last year to a marked reduction. He also noted the intensified efforts of the security forces in addressing these security threats while emphasizing a strategy of action over rhetoric.
Recognizing the pivotal role of the media, Ribadu expressed appreciation for their partnership in the collective effort to address insecurity. He called for continued collaborative efforts with the media to effectively combat the prevailing security challenges in Nigeria.
