The central Mozambican port of Beira achieved a significant milestone this month as it welcomed the “MV Floriana VI’, marking a new record for the port. The vessel, operated by the MSC shipping line and flying the Swiss flag, measures 258 meters in length and 4 meters in width, with a capacity to hold 5,364 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). This development further fortifies the port’s link to the Asian market.
The arrival of “MV Floriana VI’ highlights Beira’s growing prominence, having now received its third Post-Panamax ship. The first of these ships was the 255-meter-long “Wide Juliet’, which docked in July 2020, followed by the 266-meter-long “MSC Houston’ in June 2021.
This year alone, Beira port has surpassed its own record for accommodating the largest ships. This achievement is attributed to the commercial strategy of Cornelder of Mozambique, the Dutch-owned company that operates the port, as reported in Thursday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax’.
Cornelder’s substantial investment in Beira has led to significant enhancements in port access, including dredging the access channel and the maneuvering basin, crucial for accommodating giant Panamax and Post-Panamax ships.
Furthermore, the company has procured modern cargo handling equipment, expanded storage areas, and implemented advanced computerized systems, thereby instilling greater confidence in the port’s clientele.
The Beira container terminal stands as one of the most modern facilities in southern Africa, boasting an advanced port management system that is unparalleled in many parts of the world.
