Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has arrived in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, to participate in the UN World Day for the prevention of girl child exploitation. Her visit kicked off with a warm reception by the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Jannie Bio, at Lungi International Airport, Freetown. Subsequently, the Nigerian First Lady embarked on a boat ride into the bustling city of Freetown, the heart of Sierra Leone.
The upcoming UN World Day, scheduled for November 18, 2023, is set to shine a spotlight on the challenges of gender-based violence, the exploitation of young girls, and the alarming prevalence of rape in Africa. The event aims to foster a united front against these issues on the continent.
During the commemoration, Nigeria’s First Lady, alongside her counterparts from Angola, Ana Dias Lourenco, and the host country Sierra Leone, will symbolically pledge their commitments and raise their voices in solidarity with the fight against these pressing social issues. Moreover, they will actively engage in initiatives aimed at providing healing and support for the victims.
The visit promises an array of impactful activities, including a town hall meeting, special prayers for the afflicted, and visits to the state children’s hospital, among other engagements. This significant international engagement marks the first official trip of Nigeria’s First Lady outside the country since her attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in October, 2023.
