Renowned human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has expressed deep concern over the recent ruling by the Appeal Court, which led to the removal of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in Kano State. Yesufu cautioned that the sanctity of Nigeria’s democracy is at risk due to the actions of the judiciary.
The Appeal Court decision, presided over by a three-man panel of judges led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, upheld the nullification of Governor Yusuf’s election. The court declared a staggering 165,663 votes garnered by Yusuf invalid on the grounds that they lacked the necessary signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This controversial ruling resulted in a reduction of the governor’s votes to 853,939, while the votes of Nasir Ganuwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) remained at 890,705.
Consequently, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Court nullified Yusuf’s election, affirming the APC candidate, Gawuna, as the legitimate winner of the March 18 election.
Expressing her dismay, Yesufu took to social media to decry the situation, stating, “The judiciary is undeniably steering Nigeria’s democracy towards complete destruction. Despite the rejection of the APC by the people of Kano in 2019, electoral discrepancies persist. When the legitimate will of the people is subverted, it paves the way for illegitimate forces to prevail.”
