Enugu State Governor, Barr Peter Mbah, has announced his administration’s commitment to allocate 30 per cent of the 2024 state budget to the education sector, emphasizing that education is the primary weapon in the state’s fight against poverty.

Speaking at the 19th convocation of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in Agbani, Governor Mbah reiterated his determination to provide world-class education to even the most underprivileged children in the remotest areas of the state, using cutting-edge resources of the 21st century.

The Governor, also the visitor to the University, outlined plans for revolutionary changes in the education sector, particularly focusing on basic education.

“Education is undeniably our most potent weapon in the long-term battle against poverty. It is for this reason that education forms the core of our strategy to elevate our GDP from $4.4 billion to a minimum of $30 billion by 2031,” Governor Mbah stated.

He further emphasized, “In 2024, our state will earmark close to 30 per cent of the budget for education, surpassing the recommended international benchmark.”

Highlighting the ongoing initiatives, Governor Mbah mentioned the completion of one smart school, with contracts awarded for the construction of nine more, and plans for an additional 250 schools within the next 14 months, covering all 260 wards in the state. He explained that teachers for the pilot model school are currently undergoing training conducted by global experts.

Furthermore, he detailed that each smart school will be equipped with internet access, solar power, robotics and artificial intelligence facilities, modern ICT centres, well-equipped laboratories, creative production studios, interactive digital whiteboards, and android tablets for student use.

Commending the ESUT management for aligning with the state government’s vision for tertiary education, Governor Mbah also acknowledged the support and collaboration received from the institution since assuming office.

During the convocation, honorary doctorate degrees were conferred on distinguished individuals including Osagie Okunbor, the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited, Ike Chioke, Group Managing Director of Afrivest West Africa Ltd, and Surv Ugochukwu Chime. Furthermore, outstanding students, led by the best graduating student, Miss Barbara Ijeoma Ikeonyia, were also recognized and awarded.
