The Falconets, Nigeria’s U-20 female national team, are gearing up to take on their Tanzanian counterparts in the second leg of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup African qualifier in Abuja on Sunday.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg match at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam on Nov.12, the Falconets are determined to secure victory on home turf.

According to Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Head Coach Christopher Danjuma is placing his confidence in players like Olise and FIFA U17 World Cup bronze medallist, Opeyemi Ajakaye, to deliver the decisive goals.

Nigeria has maintained a consistent presence at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup since its inception as an U19 tournament in Canada 21 years ago, demonstrating the team’s enduring strength and determination.

The team will be led by goalkeeper Anderlin Mgbechi, who also guarded the net in Dar es Salaam, and will feature the likes of U-17 World Cup bronze medallist, Comfort Folorunsho. The defensive lineup will be anchored by captain Oluchi Ohaegbulem, supported by Jumoke Alani and Shukurat Oladipo.

In midfield, the small but creative Taiwo Afolabi is expected to lead the charge, alongside talents like Adoo Yina and Shola Shobowale, bringing dynamism and flair to the team’s gameplay.

For the upcoming crucial encounter in Nigeria, the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has appointed Rachel Nzigire from the Democratic Republic of Congo as the referee, with Ngarassoum Victorine from Chad as assistant referee one. The officiating team will also include Rachel’s compatriots, Carine Puazi and Carine Ampur as assistant referee two and fourth official, respectively, with Christine Ziga from Ghana serving as the match commissioner.

With the stage set for an exciting and competitive match, the Falconets are poised to showcase their prowess and secure their spot in the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling display of talent and determination.
