Nigeria Midfielder Alex Iwobi Calls for Resilience after Super Eagles’ Draw with Zimbabwe in 2026 WCQ

The Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Zimbabwe in their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Huye Stadium, Butare, on Sunday. This result puts Jose Peseiro’s team in a precarious position with no wins from two games, heightening the risk of missing out on the World Cup once again following their failure to qualify for Qatar 2022.

Speaking after the match, Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi emphasized the importance of maintaining a fighting spirit as they strive to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. Iwobi expressed disappointment at the outcome against Zimbabwe but urged his teammates not to dwell on it, but rather to focus on the upcoming fixtures.

Reflecting on the match at the post-game press conference, Iwobi commented, “We’re disappointed with the players we have. Nigeria is a country with a wealth of talented players, and we should have been able to secure more points and goals. We won’t dwell on this; we’ll keep fighting till the very end to ensure we qualify.”

With their sights set on redemption, the Super Eagles will face the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in their next game scheduled for June 2023, where they will seek to bounce back from the setback against Zimbabwe.
