The Defence Headquarters has verified that the 29 Task Force Brigade successfully repelled an assault on the convoy of Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, by insurgents along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road on Saturday.
In a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, on Monday in Abuja, it was disclosed that the troops recovered two vehicles affected in the incident.
Reportedly, one military truck driver, four police escorts, and one DSS operative who were wounded in the attack are in stable condition. Tragically, one of the injured police escorts passed away shortly after arriving at the Specialists Hospital in Damaturu.
“Reinforcement of troops from the 29 Task Force Brigade, led by the Brigade Commander, are carrying out a fighting patrol in the area to locate the terrorists responsible for this cowardly act,” Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba stated.
He added, “The two vehicles affected in the incident, including one military MRAP and one civilian escort vehicle, whose tires were targeted during the ambush, have been safely retrieved to the military camp at Benisheikh.”
“Operations are underway to pursue and eradicate the terrorists behind the attack,” he affirmed.
Recall that the governor’s convoy fell under ambush by terrorists while returning to Damaturu from Maiduguri, approximately 6 kilometers from Benesheikh town on Saturday.
It is important to note that the governor was not present in the convoy when it was attacked. The Secretary to the State Government and other top government officials who were in the convoy emerged unscathed.
