Akwa Ibom State Governor Commends National Bureau Of Statistics for Remarkable Performance

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has received accolades for its exceptional role in enhancing the national and state statistical systems.

During the ongoing Southern States stakeholders’ workshop on the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics 0 (NSDS) Phase III, 2024-2028 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Governor Umo Eno commended the efforts of the Statistician-General of the Federation and the NBS. He lauded their commitment to modernizing the statistical systems at both national and state levels, which enables the production of reliable official statistics. This, he noted, is vital for all stakeholders’ programs and projects.

Governor Eno highlighted the timeliness of selecting Akwa Ibom State as the host for the South-South zone of the workshop. This aligns with the state’s efforts in establishing a modernized Akwa Ibom State Bureau of Statistics (AK-SBS).

As a stakeholder in the statistical project, Governor Eno expressed his honor in hosting the important gathering. He emphasized the significance of the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Production of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS), Phase III, 2024-2028, and urged all participants to diligently contribute towards addressing gaps and challenges hindering the production of unified and accurate data that reflects current emerging realities in society.

During his keynote address at the event, the Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, outlined five guiding principles for the effective crafting of the new statistics strategy. These principles include inclusivity, quality and accuracy, innovation and technology, capacity building, and partnership and collaboration. He stressed the necessity of a robust strategy to guide the growth and development of the statistical system, which stakeholders depend on for their respective work.

Peter Akpan (KSJI), the State Director of Statistics, emphasized the indispensability of official statistics for effective governance in the current era of data. He called for concerted efforts to modernize the State and National Statistical System, utilizing the internationally recognized framework, the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS).

Furthermore, Mr. Akpan highlighted the divine alignment of hosting the Southern States Stakeholders’ workshop in Akwa Ibom State with the ongoing efforts of Governor Umo Bassey Eno to establish a modernized State Bureau of Statistics.

These commendations serve as a testament to the dedication and impact of the National Bureau of Statistics in catalyzing the modernization and advancement of the statistical systems, ensuring the production of reliable and relevant data to drive governance and development initiatives across Nigeria.
