BRICS Summit Addresses Israel-Palestine Conflict Amid Rising Tensions

The BRICS, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, are set to hold an Extraordinary Joint Meeting on the escalating Middle East Situation. A statement from the Presidency revealed that the current BRICS chair, President Cyril Ramaphosa, will be convening the critically timed gathering.

In a virtual meeting scheduled for Tuesday, leaders from the BRICS nations will be joined by invited leaders from Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates to address the pressing issue. The meeting will witness President Ramaphosa delivering the opening remarks, followed by country statements from member and invited States focusing on the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, is expected to participate in the virtual event, culminating in the anticipation of the adoption of a Joint Statement on the Middle East situation, notably emphasizing the plight of Gaza.

The recent conflict, which commenced on October 7, has resulted in a devastating toll, with approximately 1,200 casualties in Israel and a further 11,000 in Gaza.

Earlier on Monday, President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s stance on the conflict through his weekly newsletter. He emphatically expressed the country’s unwavering support for the oppressed Palestinian people, calling for justice, immediate cessation of hostilities, and accountability for the tragic civilian casualties. President Ramaphosa underscored that lasting peace hinges on the freedom of Palestinians.

This unprecedented summit serves as a testament to the gravity of the situation, as global leaders convene to deliberate and chart a path towards de-escalation and lasting peace in the region.
