Nigerian Football Legend Duke Udi Stands Firm in Support of Coach Peseiro for AFCON Success

Renowned former Super Eagles midfielder, Duke Udi, remains resolute in his endorsement of Jose Peseiro to steer the national team to continental glory in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

Despite facing criticism due to the Super Eagles’ less-than-stellar performances in recent matches, Peseiro has found an unwavering supporter in Udi.

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures, the Eagles encountered significant challenges, resulting in drawn matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, sparking increased calls for Peseiro’s dismissal. However, Udi has fervently advocated for the Portuguese coach to maintain leadership of the team.

Expressing his stance, the former Shooting Stars player remarked, “It’s premature to relieve a coach of his duties based on two drawn matches. He has not incurred any losses.”

Speaking with BBC Sports Africa, Udi emphasized, “We are still firmly on track for both the World Cup and the Nations Cup. In Ivory Coast, the unfolding of events remains unpredictable.”

Cote d’Ivoire is set to host the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations from January 13 to February 11, 2024. The Super Eagles find themselves placed in Group A alongside Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
