The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to build pedestrian bridges at key points along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The decision came after a motion was presented by Tolulope Akande-Sadipe of the All Progressives Party, who represents Oluyole Federal Constituency during a plenary session.
According to a statement released by Akande-Sadipe’s Special Assistant on Media, Olamilekan Olusada, the motion is in response to the rapid expansion of Ibadan, now ranked as the third-largest city globally based on United Nations data.
Mrs. Akande-Sadipe emphasized the urgent need for pedestrian bridges on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, citing critical safety concerns posed by the current lack of infrastructure.
She urged the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritize the construction of pedestrian bridges at strategic points along this crucial route, highlighting the significance of the expressway as a vital passage for daily activities.
“The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, cutting through densely populated areas of the city, has become a fundamental thoroughfare for daily commutes. However, the absence of pedestrian bridges has depreciated the safety of both pedestrians and motorists,” she stated.
She further highlighted the alarming frequency of fatal accidents occurring as people endeavor to cross the highway in order to reach schools, homes, workplaces, and markets.
